FAQs eway

eway Transponder
What is the eway transponder, how much does it cost and how does it work?

The eway transponder is an electronic device which is installed at your vehicle giving you the opportunity to pay toll fees by charging your account at electronic toll lanes, thus making your journey easier and more convenient.

The transponder works in a simple way.

When you drive your vehicle through the electronic lane of the toll station, the system installed at the lane recognizes the transponder and your vehicle category.

Automatically, the system debits your account with the appropriate toll fee based on the category of your vehicle.

At the same time, the electronic board informs you about the status of your account.

There is no cost to subscribe to eway service and get your transponder.

You may even request that all paperwork regarding your subscription to eway and the transponder (or transponders) is sent by courier to your preferred address free of charge.

You are only required to credit 20€ to your account when you use your eway transponder for the first time. This money is not a guarantee and neither is any money reserved in your account. On the contrary, they constitute available funds, debited every time you use your eway transponder to go through electronic toll lanes.

What is the eway SMART CARD and how is it used?

The SMART CARD eway is a prepaid electronic card used by motorcycles and tricycles to pay tolls.

It is provided free of charge (like the eway transponder). The eway SMART CARD can be used only at manual lanes.

In other words, you stop at a manual lane, you give your SMART CARD eway to the toll collector and pay the corresponding toll fee.

The Basic (1.0, 1.1, 1.2) subscription program has been created especially for the eway SMART CARD

What size is the eway transponder and how long does it battery last for?

The eway transponder with its stand measures only 7.4 cm (L) x 4.7 cm (W) x 2.3 cm (D). The eway transponder is small and manageable and can be placed quickly and easily on the inside of the windscreen of any vehicle (apart from motorcycles and tricycles).

The eway transponder operates on a battery and has a life duration of approximately 5 to 7 years.

Note: If you detect any problem in the operation of the eway transponder, please visit any of the Customer Service Points, so that we may check it and, if necessary, replace it free of charge.

Do transponders give off radiation? Are they any dangerous for my health?
  • The electronic toll collection system of Aegean Motorway and the eway service use transponders of the latest technology made in Austria which operate according to the strictest specifications of the European Union (CE) and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regarding public protection from electromagnetic fields.

  • The transponder is passive at all times (does not emit any radiation) apart from the moment when the vehicle enters the electronic lane. At that time, it is activated by the antenna that is installed above the lane and for a few seconds, it emits towards this (and not towards the passengers of the car) a small amount of radiation.
  • For the time that the transaction lasts, the antenna of the electronic toll lane emits the same amount of radiation as a mobile phone being in use for a few seconds at a distance of 5.5 meters from us.

  • It is evident therefore that there is no reason to worry for using a transponder.
