Progress of Works

Overall Progress of Works 90,5% (May 2016)

In Particular:

New Section of the motorway - Evangelismos - Southern Portal of Tunnel T1

This section is approximately 2.5 km long and constitutes the extension of the existing motorway from Evangelismos I/C to Tembi Valley, up to the portal of Tunnel T1. The construction of both the structure for the protection of the Gas Pipe and the OSE & Old National Road “twin tunnels” has been completed. Currently, the underpass serving traffic to adjacent properties is being constructed. The earth works and sewerage/ drainage works are also in progress. Total progress of works for this section is at 87%. 

Tunnel T1

This is the first “twin” tunnel of Tembi Valley, approximately 2km long.
The excavation and the final lining works have been completed.
All asphalt layers have been completed whilst E/M infrastructures are in progress, completed by 83%.

New section of the motorway – Northern portal of Tunnel Τ1 – Southern portal of Tunnel Τ2

This is the open road section that connects tunnels T1 and T2 of Tembi Valley, approximately 1km long.
Earth works and technical works have been completed, whilst sewerage/ drainage works, road construction and E/M facilities are currently in progress. Total progress at this section stands at 83%.

Tunnel Τ2

This is the second “twin” tunnel of Tembi Valley, approximately 6km long – the largest road tunnel in the Balkans.
The excavation and the final lining works have been completed.
All 6 asphalt layers have been completed.
The E/M infrastructures are currently in progress, completed by 78%.

New section of the motorway - Northern portal of Tunnel Τ2 – Rapsani

This is the open road section from the exit of Tunnel T2 at Omolio to the Rapsani I/C, for a length of approximately 3km. This section will be connected with the existing section of the motorway (Rapsani – Aigani section) at Pyrgetos Toll Station. Furthermore, it is foreseen that a semi – interchange will be constructed at Rapsani servicing connection with Raspani, Pyrgetos and the adjacent towns with Larissa. This semi-interchange will also connect the motorway with the Old National Road at Tembi, an area of environmental and cultural interest.
It is foreseen that 6 bridges will be constructed, the largest of which will be the Pinios River Bridge, extending over 200m. Except for asphalt works, all other works at the Bridge have now been completed. Total progress at this section stands at 80%.

New section of the motoway - Aigani– Southern portal of Tunnel T3

This is the open road section from Aigani I/C to the portal of Tunnel T3 at Panteleimonas, of a length of approximately 5.5 km long. In this section, the new motorway “runs” parallel and to the west of the old National Road. An interchange is foreseen to be constructed at Platamonas to connect the Platamonas coastal areas with the old National Road. In addition, 8 bridges shall be constructed, the largest of which is 40m long. Construction works for the bridges have been completed, whilst road construction and asphalt works are currently in progress. The total progress of works at this section stands at 80%. 

Tunnel T3

 This is the third “twin” tunnel located at the Panteleimonas area, approximately 3km long – the largest road tunnel in the Balkans.
The excavation and the final lining works have been completed.Drainage/ sewerage works have also been completed whilst at the southern portal, asphalt works are in progress, completed by 40%. E/M facilities are also in progress, completed by 68%.

New section of the motorway - Northern portal of Tunnel T3– Skotina

This is the last open road section of the new motorway, for a length of 1.7 km where this meets the existing motorway at Skotina. At this section, the new motorway “follows on” the existing old National Road which is “relocated” to the east with the construction of the New section.
3 bridges are foreseen to be constructed in this section, the largest of which is 200m long. The bridges have almost been completed. For the whole section to be completed it is necessary for the Old National Road to be relocated to the east; this is expected to take place shortly, once certain expropriation issues are resolved. Total progress at this section stands at 79%.

Tunnels' E/M Systems

To better serve the users and to increase the level of safety provided, the following systems shall be installed at each of the new Tunnels:

  • Extraction & lighting systems
  • Fire extinguishing / fire fighting systems
  • Radio system for information
  • Electronic management (SCADA)
  • Cameras
  • Emergency phones
  • Light signaling and information via VMS
  • Height, emissions & visibility detectors
  • Incident detectors
